Mech 2 Win 95 - last resort

Post by cels83 »

Hey there,
First off, congratulations on having what seems like a fantastic forum. This site has already been a huge help.

Now, I've been trying to get the Win 95 version to work - and after coming here, I realise I do need to get my hands on the DOS version ASAP instead - and it's been quite an affair. Each time I try to get this game working, I run into a problem, come here, fix it, and run into a new problem. Well, I've come quite far now, so I want to give this a last shot while I look for the DOS version.

Basically, every time I try to launch a mission (training, campaign, trial of grievance, doesn't matter), the screen goes black for a second and then the mission is automatically over. In the campaign mode, I get 'mission failed'. Is there an easy fix to this, or are you just going to suggest that I get the DOS version instead? ;)

Thanks,
Carl

PS: Apologies if this has already been discussed. I did try to look for similar problems, but it seems everyone has a different problem with the Win95 versions :)

Got your fix here, Carl:
Here first
Alternate option

Download that first one, it patches up your '95 version of Mechwarrior 2 (assuming it's the pentium edition)
Basicly, after running it, all you have to do is right-click your mech2.exe executionable, set compatibility mode to '95 or '98, disable advanced text services, click "ok", then you're done! after that, give it a try and see if that works. :)

Hope you get the fix you're looking for. I had practicly the very same thing happen to me. If it doesn't seem to work, try doing it on an alternate computer. I use the '95 install rather than DOS, because it feels so much cleaner under windows, and you can multitask too. Which is good for us modders who are using their hex editors and playing at the same time. ;)

that is right Kell, but from what it sounds like he has already has gone through all that; especially, if he has read the forums throughly.

Pretty much yes celes83 I would suggest the dos version.
The auto mission failure is the same as many others are having. There is no real fix for it... if you have tried all 3 ways of patching the game there are no other fixes.

The only fix which I have found for myself is the following:
A. Reformat.
B. Install VMWARE and run it through that.

I would not suggest A... and B.. well not everyone has vmware... microsoft virtual pc is also a solution but i have not touched that myself in a very long time.

Anyway, umm I did find a copy of mech2 dos on ebay I think... but if you do want to bid on it ... ask the seller if it is indeed the dos version because I am basing this solely on the picture as the seller does not have any info up on it. There does not appear to be any other copies of mech2 dos on there ... last couple of months has been scarce for mech2 dos... I would not be suprised if the market of mech2 DOS cd's was not drying up because of our pushing that version.

Edit: I take it back I found one other.. but it is double the price... in box and everything.

Also this simple dos version.. box one is a better deal though..

These people with these prices are just ripping people off .. it is sad... check the first link i gave ya first and ask.. much much cheaper..

Wow, thanks for the lightning fast replies!

I did already try the first patch (Slug patch or something?). The second one (Alternate option) I haven't seen before. Is it DOS-based? I guess I could still use it in Windows Vista if I knew how to run commands in the bugger. Oh, and yeah, I use Vista. I guess I should have mentioned that in my first post. Maybe that's why I couldn't figure out how to disable advanced text services (I guess by clicking properties on the Mech2.exe in Windows XP?)

I'll probably go and buy the DOS version off of Ebay anyway. There really is no game like MechWarrior 2 and while the later games are great, there's something from MW2 that they all fail to capture, in my opinion. I don't know if it's the old school clean 3D graphics (without textures... mmm...) or if it's the fact that you play as a Clanner and get to say "Neg!"
So if I can't figure out the Alternate Option, I'll just have to wait for the DOS version... <sob>

PS: Thanks for the ebay links.

Vista doh!
Yah, the 2nd option Kell mentioned does not work too well with vista... I have gotten it to work a few times but I have not had too much luck with it..
Give it a try anyway as you never know whether it might work. I do think you are stuck though...
PS: Thanks for the ebay links.
no problem! :)

Below is a picture of what a shortcut should look like in order to get the hook to work.
