Hi all, noobie here to the board,

I've read thru things and I downloaded and installed MechVM-win32-2010-02-20..... and I run the installer, mechvm....and I keep getting a message looking for the cd image file. I don't have a cd image file, I have the cd I purchased back in '96 I think... and I get messages to see the readmeXP file...but there is no readmeXP file with the software I downloaded...
Can someone help a noob?
Randy

If you get the readmeXP notification, you are using Windows XP, and a CD image is optional. readmeXP is a file created by MechVM. It contains notes on installing VDMSound and SapuCDEx for enhanced sound under Windows XP.

After some people had problems running the DOS games under Windows XP, I decided to add the option of running these games using DosBox for Windows XP. Under Windows XP, the games often work without DosBox, but if they don't, DosBox is offered as a fallback solution. DosBox requires a CD image to work with the CD, and MechVM requires that image only if you need DosBox to run your games. On Windows Vista and Windows 7, DosBox is required, so you need CD images for DOS editions of the game on these operating systems.

While disk images do take up a good amount of disk storage, they can be more handy than using the actual CD's, they serve as a backups, so you won't scratch your original CDs while handing images. Of course, the industry will tell that images are evil, but their reasons for saying so may not be in your best interest.
