The Guide method to installing not working

Hi all, first post here so thanks in advance for the help. I'm trying to install and play MW2 Dos version onto my XP system and am having difficulty. I tried several different methods which resulted in me successfully installing and playing the game, however the music was not working. I found "The Guide" on this website and decided to uninstall MW2 and do it your way via Mech VM. However, I am now having the following problems:

Mech VM installs MW2 but it will not play. I get a "Process ended with code 0" message, and in the command box it says "Mechwarrior 2 CD not found", even though the CD is in there.

- As a result of this I uninstalled everything again and tried to re-install via the other method I had used (which was successful minus music), however now the installer says inside a red box "install.exe must be run from the cd-rom. please put the mechwarrior 2 cd-rom in our drive and restart the installation process again".

So it seems there's now some problem with the Mech 2 CD being detected...

Any help would be appreciated.

*Note* - I've managed to get it installed on another PC just by installing through windows XP command, patching to FIXED 1.1 and using the batch file. It works fine on the other PC, however it's my media PC for the TV. I'm still unable to get past the installation not recognising my CD on my gaming rig.

Welcome to mech2.org.

MW2 plays the ingame music directly from CD. You need to have a cable connecting your CD-ROM to the sound card or mainboard.

Do you get that immediately when launching the game? One common cause is having several (actual or virtual) CD-ROM drives. MW2 expects the game to be in the first drive. But did you try to run the game directly? MechVM installs the game to the "game" subfolder, try running it from there directly using _mw2-31stcc.bat.

Don't know what causes this.

I am looking at this and honestly i have never seen that error in that context... it kinds sounds like you did not do a full install, but i doubt that is the case...
Could you please tell us what version of the disc you are installing off of?

Thanks for your help guys.

The disc is the very orginal DOS disc, I bought it as soon as it came out in 95 (sorry, I am not o fay with the terminology for versions). As you alluded to I did a full blown and complete install, in fact in trouble shooting the lack of music this was about my 5th complete re-install (totally delete the game and reinstall) so it's got me baffled as to why it suddenly decided to stop seeing the disk. As it stands now there are no copies of Mech 2 on my hard disc, I click on the install.exe file in the CD rom, click ignore for the error that comes up about writing to the desk, and in the dos window it immediately comes up with the mech 2 installer saying that mech 2 install must be run for the CD.

As I also noted, I successfully installed MW2 on my media PC and have got it working properly (ATI card so it's a rainbow world), music and all. But that PC is in the movie room, not my gaming rig.

Basically, I tried a method not using VM that had the game working fine but without music. So I found VM, uninstalled mech, and used the VM method to install. First go at it and as soon as I click play I got the Code 0 message. I cannot remember if I tried just running it without VM (have tried so many different ways, sorry). I uninstalled it, tried again with VM, same result. At this point I gave up on VM and tried the old way again, it was at this point that I was unable to install the game again, and have been unable to ever since. I've tried deleting VM, doing a system restore to 2 days ago, and have disabled virtual drives...no dice.

Some thoughts:
  • How many CD-ROM drives do you have installed in your system (virtual or real)?
  • Please make sure you have Win95 compatibility enabled when using the CD's installer.
  • Please try installing with MechVM again, and this time try launching the game using the BAT file.
I cannot think of a reason why MechVM would prevent you from reinstalling the game normally.

Have 1 real DVD ROM and now no virtual devices (Had one).
Wing95 compatibility set
Tried installing with Mechvm...noticed that it "installs" very quickly and the file it creates is only 28mb in size. I suspect that it;s only importing mechs, not installing the game, based on the messages coming up in the DOS window. Anyway, I get the same error in VM, and trying the bat file does nothing - probably because the game isn't installed.

Please post the file install-report.txt from where MechVM installed the game, probably <MechVM>\games\mw2-31stcc.
