How to work on Vista?

I got everything to install OK (I downloaded Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries via Torrent). Now it runs just like if there was a CD. But when I go to double click the .exe icon, a black box pops up and my desktop shows up again.
1. Vista, Service Pack 1
2. The regular one, not Titanium
3. Daemon Tools and Alcohol 52%...tried using both, I can get to the Splash screen where you can click "play." The woman says "accessing" and then the screen goes black and returns me to my desktop. I also tried running in older versions of Windows, but to no avail.
If the best way to solve this is to run it through DOS, I do have DOSBox, but how do I get that to work?
