Fun with GIMP

While procrastinating, I was playing with some screenshots. This is from Heavy Gear 2, with cartoonifying the background and separately enhancing the gear itself --
By the way, note the "seam" in the animated skybox. I didn't notice it until I filtered the backgruond.

I second that! What a waste of $49.95 (back then games were cheap!)

Neither is as good as MW2, but HG2 was better than HG1 in almost all respects. It must be said though that HG1 had a built-in online campaign system (which didn't really work over time).
HG2 had pretty fun gameplay though, and still looks stunning at times (I think).

I have got to agree with you on both of those points. I had purchased 5 copies of HG1 for friends on the day it was released and we were all very disappointed. The multiplayer was Activision's first attempt at a persistent online environment and it clearly did not work. Each side (north/south) would receive resources based on the overall number of their victories. Unfortunately, one side was always severely limited by this and could only field the smallest of gears in online battle. Loosing became a self fulfilling prophecy since the side with smaller gears usually lost. I can recall (previously confidential) internal discussions about how Activision was constantly inserting resource points into keep the online game semi-balanced. The online components were a disaster and the downfall to Heavy Gear 1! Oh, and Gears weren't Mechs.
Some of you may or may not remember but we actually had a Heavy Gear league at the Grand Council.... The Gear Gaming League (GGL). Because of the online limitations of Heavy Gear, we had 44 teams sign up but could never implement league rules. The numerous online component issues killed the concept.
*Big Sigh*
You can see some of the Gear Gaming League design over on the BadKarma Museum / Archive:
( Note: I just realized the GGL site is now over 10 years old, launching on the 12th of November, 1997 ... damn! )

I love the logo, WB. The old HG art has a certain appeal.
In other news, I'm not sure if on the PC this is Vista only or what, but interesting HG news nevertheless --
